Quercus Emancipation.
Painted plaster with hemp, various dimensions.
Wave Hill, Bronx, New York.

I was commissioned by Wave Hill to create a site-specific sculpture for the 2003 exhibition, Hybrids, and found inspiration for my piece from the architectural detailing inside and outside the surrounding buildings and their relation to the trees and landscape.

I made rubber molds capturing some of these details, such as the oak-leaf and acorn pattern around the fireplace in the Glyndor Gallery. The sculptures in this installation incorporate almost all the ornamentation from the room in which they were placed. Small acorn-heads in earth tones are crowded at a window and are about to escape to the gigantic oak (Quercus rubra) with its real acorns just outside.
